Optelian Adds Higher Bandwidth System to LightGAIN Optical Networking Platform

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

Optelian, a designer and manufacturer of optical transport systems, has recently announced that the company’s LightGAIN optical networking platform now offers a higher bandwidth system. The LightGAIN will now include 80-channel DWDM capacity and Optelian (News - Alert) will be demonstrating the higher bandwidth system at OFC/NFOEC at booth #2400, which will be held soon at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The LightGAIN system has been designed to help Long-Haul and Metro Network operators manage the rapid growth of their networks. In addition, Optelian has formed a partnership with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) of India to address demand in international markets.

In a release, the Chief Technology Officer, Optelian, Sheldon Walklin, said, "Explosive bandwidth demands from mobile devices and over-the-top video services are driving the need for more transport capacity in optical networks. Our 80-channel solution is scalable, can be upgraded while in service, and is simple to manage. It has multi-degree ROADM (News - Alert) capability with fully automated optical power management. Moreover, it is 40 GB/s and 100 GB/s ready, providing a future upgrade path to 8 Tb/s per fiber."

Optelian’s LightGAIN is an innovative optical platform which has been designed for simple point-to-point systems as well as large, complex networks, and is a multi-haul, fully featured, optical networking system which delivers the latest capabilities for next generation optical networks.

LightGAIN's modularity will enable network operators to start with a 40-channel system, and then scale to 80 channels by simply adding another 40-channel multiplexer. This can be achieved without disrupting traffic on existing channels.

In response to the surging demand, Optelian launched the 80-channel DWDM which has a higher capacity enabling North American Network operators to manage their growing networks. The higher capacity is supported by leveraging 50 GHz spaced 80-channel multiplexers, two and four degree ROADMs, optical channel monitors, higher powered optical fiber amplifiers, high linearity fiber Bragg grating dispersion compensation modules and tunable DWDM transponders.

Optelian’s optical transport systems, with more than 6000 systems and over 140,000 wavelengths installed, have served some of the world's largest network operators. Since 2002, Optelian has offered exceptional product quality, speed of delivery, superior customer support and custom-design capabilities, and its portfolio of optical solutions has enabled telecom, multi-service operator (MSO), utility and enterprise customers to expand their fiber capacity so they can increase revenue, cost-effectiveness and efficiency.
