Mellanox's Monson Explains Ethernet Switching, Cloud Infrastructures

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

At the recent Interop (News - Alert) Vegas 2011 show, TMC’s Group Editorial Director, Erik Linask, had the opportunity to speak with John Monson, VP of Marketing for Mellanox (News - Alert) Technologies.

The company’s coming off a high-profile product announcement, as the seller of end-to-end connectivity tools for data center servers and storage systems announced the availability of its ConnectX-3 Virtual Protocol Interconnect adapter ICs and cards, providing FDR 56Gb/s InfiniBand and 10/40GbE connectivity combined with the PCI (News - Alert) Express 3.0 host bus for improved scalability and fabric flexibility.

During the video Monson used an example of their Ethernet switch to give an impressively detailed explanation of all the ways to use the product and get more advantages out of it.

Monson was appointed vice president of marketing responsible for Mellanox's worldwide marketing and the implementation of marketing initiatives in March of 2009.

And he addressed cloud usage. “As soon as you start talking about cloud, you’re talking about infrastructures that are compressing and becoming very large,” Monson said. “You want to be able to migrate, you need a flexible infrastructure to do that.” He noted that such demands were “a good fit” for Mellanox’s technology.

Monson also spoke to the advantages of the relatively low power consumption of the product as well. Customers sometimes come to them with a power footprint, basically asking “How much can I get within these power limits?”

In March TMC’s (News - Alert) Calvin Azuri reported that Mellanox’s Vantage 6048 10 Gigabit Ethernet switches were selected by Blekko as the core backbone for its data center fabric and search infrastructure. Data center servers and storage systems are supplied with high-performance, end-to-end connectivity solutions by Mellanox.
