TMCnet 10G Ethernet Week in Review

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

It was a busy week in the 10G Ethernet sector. Here are some of the major stories from TMCnet.

Silver Peak Systems introduced a new WAN optimization appliance called NX-10000 (NX-10K). The new Peak NX-10K is a multi-gigabit-per-second (Gbps) WAN optimization appliance, and is built for next-generation data centers, and supports cloud and virtualization architectures.

In another story, Romania-based Romtelecom has selected the ADVA (News - Alert) FSP 3000 Agile Core transport solution for critical networks in Romania, such as county-wide rings, a national network throughout the co 10 G ETHERNET 10 G Ethernetuntry, and an international link connecting Romania and Germany. Romtelecom provides wholesale services, managed and dark-fiber leased services, mobile backhaul, data center connectivity, cloud computing and colocation services.

In addition, LG-Ericsson has launched two new iPECS switches – the iPECS ES-1105G five-port and ES-1108G eight-port Gigabit Unmanaged Ethernet switches. LG-Ericsson (News - Alert) iPECS ES-1100G Gigabit Ethernet Switches can transmit and receive traffic. Each port provides up to 2Gbps of bandwidth for transmitting and receiving packets in full-duplex mode, and supports auto uplink. The iPECS ES-1100G switches also support industry standard EEE (Energy Efficient Ethernet) technology.

Also, Panasonic Corporation has built new 60GHz multi-gigabit wireless communication technology that can be used for mobile devices and supports the WiGig specification and/or the IEEE802.11ad draft specification. The technology is 20 times faster than existing wireless LANs using the 60GHz frequency band, and through the optimization of both the transceiver core and peripheral circuits, Panasonic (News - Alert) said.

And service providers are opting to buy carrier Ethernet equipment over rival products, according to a recent report from Infonetics Research. Worldwide spending on the carrier Ethernet equipment market is expected to reach $37.5 billion in 2015. "The growth in service provider investments in carrier Ethernet equipment continues to outpace that of other telecom equipment,” Michael Howard (News - Alert), Infonetics Research's principal analyst for carrier and data center networks, said in a company statement that was carried by TMCnet. “The largest investments are in routers, carrier Ethernet switches and optical gear. Ethernet microwave is the fastest growing segment due to its use for mobile backhaul.”
