If you are reading this article and you think your friend might like it, you’ll probably tweet a link to it or post it on your Facebook (News - Alert) page. You may even have found your way to this article in the first place via a link to Twitter or another social networking site. We all know that social networking is changing the way that people interact with each other, but how many of us have taken a step back and wondered about those people – such as the sight-impaired – who are not easily able to access these sites? Well now, thanks to the folks at Sangoma, sight-impaired users will get a chance to take part in the social media revolution.
Sangoma is teaming up with Proximus, a Chilean-based communications provider, to address the needs of the more than 39 million blind people across the world who have trouble just using computers. Proximus joined forces with PaloSanto Solutions of Ecuador in order to create a robust, cost-effective and scalable platform capable of serving more than 4,000 users. The platform is based on the Elastix (News - Alert) open source telephony platform, which operates on PaloSanto’s robust, server-based solution. At the heart of this solution are digital telephony interface boards from Sangoma, providing connectivity from the Proximus system to the PSTN.
"Sangoma proved to be a highly reliable choice," said Paul Estrella, head of product development at PaloSanto. "As we worked closely with Proximus to design the final solution that would meet the performance requirements for the platform, we knew from the start that Sangoma boards were the best option for IP-to-TDM and PSTN integration."
"The voice hardware actually became the easiest part of this project" Estrella continued. "This, in turn, allowed our team to concentrate their efforts on other parts of the development to create the features and applications that dramatically expand the value of the system."
In its recent case study, “Social Networking Made Possible for the Sight-Impaired,” Sangoma explains the ins and outs of this technology. It is available for download here.
