Turnkey Linux, an open source project developing a free virtual appliance library, announced the availability of part one of its TurnKey Linux 11 release featuring 45 ready-to-use Ubuntu (News - Alert)-based solutions, in a press release.

As a virtual appliance library, the Turnkey Linux pre-configures popular server stacks such as LAMP, Tomcat, Ruby, as well as applications such as Drupal, Joomla, WordPress, and more with a core configuration of Ubuntu, in order to create ready-to-run software appliances that can be easily installed on bare metal, virtual machine or launched on-demand in the cloud.

For those unaware, Ubuntu is an open-source operating system based on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution.

According to TurnKey Linux, it is a virtual appliance library that helps users save time as well as money, by allowing users to download an appliance according to their needs that are ready to run. Leveraging the free open source software, TurnKey Linux’s solutions are built and pre-tested by a community of experts, in order to prioritize the ease of use and security.

An appliance offered TurnKey Linux creates a combination of a base operating system and software, to serve a specialized purpose. TurnKey Linux’s virtual appliances have been developed in collaboration with the open source community.

Some of the standard features included in the TurnKey Linux 11 are sleek web management interfaces, smart backup and restore automation, and daily security updates.

The latest, part one of the TurnKey Linux 11 release, covers 45 ready-to-use solutions that are based on Ubuntu 10.04 Long Term Support (LTS until April 2015). This release also includes a smart, automated backup and restores facility, which is powered by the Amazon S3 storage cloud “TKLBAM.”

According to TurnKey Linux, the backup and restore system is designed to make it easy to move or clone a TurnKey system anywhere along with any changed files, databases, packages and users.

Apart from providing offering new ESX4 / vSphere optimized OVF builds, part one of the TurnKey Linux 11 release also eliminates the need to change default passwords. So, users can configure all passwords on first boot.

The part one of the TurnKey Linux 11 release will also feature LVM support. So, a Logical Volume is first created by default instead of installing to a fixed size partition. The Logical Volume can be expanded later, even across multiple physical devices.

Apart from offering five new appliances for Magento, PrestaShop, StatusNet, vTiger CRM and Joomla 1.6, part one of the TurnKey Linux 11 release provides TurnKey Amazon Machine Images “AMIs” in the Amazon EC2 Asia pacific region as well.

According to TurnKey Linux, its part two of the TurnKey Linux 11 release, which will be more than double the size of the library with the nearly 50 new virtual appliances, will be released soon.
