Man who broke woman's eye socket sent to prison
DAYTON, Dec 22, 2012 (Dayton Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
A man who fractured a woman's eye socket during a July 22 robbery and sexual assault was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison.
Earl Draper, 45, pleaded guilty Nov. 30 to felonious assault, aggravated robbery, gross sexual imposition and tampering with evidence.
"This defendant, who has a lengthy and violent criminal history, was on parole for committing burglary when he attacked and robbed this woman," said Montgomery County Prosecutor Mathias H. Heck Jr.
"A defendant who is willing to brutally attack someone and cause such injuries in order to rob her, is certainly a menace to our community and must be behind bars," Heck said.
Cox Media Group Ohio does not identify sexual assault victims.
In the early morning hours of July 22, the victim was on the 900 block of Wayne Avenue. The defendant attacked her and caused her to suffer a fractured eye socket among other injuries, then robbed her and forced her to submit to sexual contact by choking her, Heck said.
The victim was eventually able to free herself from the defendant and ran toward a nearby service station where she received help from several bystanders. She was treated for her injuries, which required her to spend several days in a hospital, Heck said.
Dayton police obtained security video from the service station and it was broadcast on local news programs, seeking the public's help in identifying the attacker. The defendant, seeing himself on the news, surrendered to police July 26.
