Go Big or Go Home? Kelowna Marketing Company Thrives in Between as a Boutique Agency
(PR Web Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Kelowna, British Columbia (PRWEB) January 09, 2013
Three years ago, someone asked Twin Creek Media CEO James Shaw where his Kelowna marketing agency was headed. Shaw shrugged.
“Wherever we’re going, we’re going to be small, weird and expensive,” Shaw replied. At the time, Twin Creek Media was going through some growing pains. Founded in 2004 as a Kelowna web design company in Shaw’s home loft, the company’s client list and its reputation for building strong brands and websites grew quickly.
Soon, Twin Creek Media was in an office with almost 10 staff plus 10+ contractors. There was even someone who managed the software that managed the projects. But it was too much. Shaw spent more time training and less creating; staff came and went and often disappointed. Along with long-time programmer Thomas Berger, in 2011, Shaw decided to take Twin Creek Media the small boutique route.
“We really loved it. Absolutely loved it,” said Shaw. “Our revenues took a dip, but our expenses walked off a cliff.” So, Shaw and Berger gave themselves big raises and carried on designing killer marketing material rather than killing themselves corralling people. Berger adds, “We were stuck in the bigger is better mind frame, but learned that smaller is sweeter in so many ways.” The team now enjoys less stress and more love for their work. With crazy overtime hours no longer necessary, they now have more time to enjoy the famous Okanagan lifestyle.
Today, Shaw, Berger and lead graphic designer Christina Van are all partners who share a funky, open concept studio office off Baron Road. Van speaks about the open work environment, “There are no physical walls… we can share ideas really easily, which is great for our creativity and problem solving.” About the benefits of going boutique two years ago, Berger adds, “Our clients become like family, and without any middle management between us and them, it’s honest, fun, and free of political layers.”
Although the core team is entirely local, Twin Creek Media keeps an international roster - with about 8 contractors around the world, including a Filipino researcher and a Romanian designer. They position themselves as an on-demand, up-and-running Marketing Dept. that companies can plug in to their existing operations. “For the cost of a single junior marketing person on staff, a business owner or marketing director could hire us – and add a whole marketing department”, said Shaw.
As a boutique both Twin Creek Media and their clients form long-term relationships that are more like partnerships. Shaw explains, “It feels like we’re investing in them and we’re building something together.” The whole team agrees that being small and weird is good thing after all. They are excited about a future full of opportunity living and working in the Okanagan Valley.
From planning to production to promotion, Twin Creek Media has helped hundreds of businesses boost site traffic and sales. Recently, Twin Creek Media shot Best Western Kelowna’s website up to Google’s first page and are currently producing a set of videos for YouTube. For Lake Country’s Jealous Fruits, Twin Creek Media built a custom web-based application to aid them hiring their 600 cherry pickers last season. The Kelowna web design and marketing agency serves not only the Okanagan Valley but businesses in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, Toronto, and all throughout Canada.
