Panasonic (News - Alert) is one of the leading brands in full HD 3D technology and built-in TV web entertainment. They recently made an announcement on the launch of a new social TV feature, Split Screen. This feature will allow the user to launch Skype along with watching their programs on VIERA HDTV. Skype has taken the Social TV functionality to higher realms with their recent introduction of original Social TV app.  While watching TV, a user can also access popular social media sites like Twitter and Facebook (News - Alert) on their VIERA HDTV.

In a release, Merwan Mereby, Panasonic Corporation of North America Vice President, said, "Skype has proven to be very popular for Panasonic's VIERA Connect and our research showed that users wanted a feature that would permit them to watch their HDTV, while at the same time video chatting with friends and family. VIERA Connect is a cloud based and a robust IPTV platform that lets consumers connect like never before. We firmly believe that Connected TV will continue to become an increasingly important feature for consumers and Panasonic is focused on providing the consumer with the best possible Internet experience and to that end we are working diligently to build upon the already strong entertainment and connectivity experiences our VIERA Connect customers can enjoy."

This expansion of Skype has given viewers the ability to watch TV while making a video call. This is a testimony to Panasonic's unwavering effort re-defining the TV experience. Some of the apps to join entertainment and information bandwagon as Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, huluPLUS, CinemaNow, Ustream, Skypevoice and video calling. These are besides Pandora (News - Alert), YouTube, Google's Picasa Web Album, and WSJ (Wall Street Journal) Live. There are several sports sites too such as MLS and Fox Sports and gaming sites, such as Asphalt5 and Free Throw.

Panasonic first brought out its IPTV (News - Alert) platform around four years ago. Since then, the functionality of the Internet has expanded to include movies, music, and social media among many other things. Panasonic's IPTV functionality was especially created for consumers to give them access to these great sites without needing a separate set top box.

Mereby said, "When combined with Panasonic's award winning Full HD 3D VIERA HDTVs, the enhanced VIERA Connect Internet platform provides the consumer with exceptional entertainment value and variety."
