When Hewlett-Packard (News - Alert) released the HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM), it was touted as the foundational platform for HP’s server and storage management. It is a mature systems solution that provides fault monitoring, inventory reporting and configuration management using a Web-based GUI or command line; and, it paved the way for similar solutions. Now, HP is hoping to do the same for hybrid cloud initiatives.

Recently, the company announced its Converged Cloud, a stealth portfolio of services designed for enterprise customers with hybrid cloud environments. Cloud computing enables companies of any size to achieve greater measures of business agility and cost effectiveness. It offers a range of advantages for transforming an IT department from a source of expense to a tool for greater corporate profit. But along with the benefits that accrue with implementing a cloud solution, new issues can arise. Security, data integrity, and high availability (HA) are just some of the concerns. For that reason, companies have felt more secure using hybrid cloud solutions. A hybrid cloud combines aspects of a public and private cloud to extend the infrastructure integrity.

The HP Converged Cloud converges elements and services for private, managed and public clouds with traditional IT for providing seamless access to cloud-based infrastructures, applications and information anywhere at any time. HP Cloud Services is based on the open source OpenStack cloud fabric. It has five core components: the Nova compute controller, Swift (News - Alert) object storage, Horizon administration dashboard, Keystone identity manager, and Glance image service.

According to Thomas Ryan, vice president of marketplace and ecosystem within HP’s Cloud Services unit, “HP has come up with its own Cloud Block Storage analog to Amazon's Elastic Block Storage service that will complement the Swift service.” HP Cloud Maps will be part of the new service being rolled out. It offers a set of pre-packaged templates to produce apps ready for push-button deployment as well as virtual application networks for combating the bottlenecks in workflows seen with older, legacy networks. HP will offer the new solution in beta mode as a public Infrastructure-as-a-Service on Thursday, May 10.
