Internet2 has successfully implemented SIP cloud voice services at its latest office in Emeryville, California. The country’s major higher education institutions have established an affiliate-owned sophisticated technology community, Internet2. Associates will be provided the SIP Services as part of the Internet2 NET+ portfolio, which includes Aastra’s (News - Alert) Hosted PBX Solution and Level 3 Communications’ SIP Trunking Services.

The SIP Services will be made available over the Internet2 network.

In a statement, Charlie McMahon, VP, Information Technology and CTO, Tulane University said, “This service comes at an opportune time for Tulane as our PBX (News - Alert) systems are nearing end of life. It also fits right in line with our rapid adoption of cloud services in many areas. The challenges we face at Tulane are not unique, and I am convinced other institutions can derive similar benefits from adoption. Leveraging the benefits of the Internet2 SIP Service alone can save millions of dollars for the higher education community.”

The SIP Services program, while in the Research Incubator stage, was sponsored by Tulane. While the program was in the Service Validation stage, McMahon was a member of the CIO steering committee. Texas A&M University, Tulane University and University of Maryland, Baltimore County will be initially implementing the SIP Services program.

All qualified campuses can avail the program, by spring 2013.

The SIP services will also be installed at Internet2 offices in Washington, D.C. and Ann Arbor, Michigan in the near future.

Shel Waggener, SVP at Internet2 said, “The growing interest in the SIP Services is good validation that by leveraging member needs and demand, synergies of both customization and efficiency will be another factor in driving innovation within research and education. We welcome the addition of new early adopters who can immediately benefit from the service and look forward to more of our member institutions capitalizing on this tremendous opportunity.”

Internet2 will be holding webinars providing details about the SIP Services on February 27 and March 7.

Internet2 was established in 1996. An associative environment for U.S. research and education enterprises is offered by Internet2. Enterprises are therefore able to resolve general technology issues and develop groundbreaking solutions for assisting their educational, research, and community service missions.
