Police investigate Ukiah shooting, robberies

Dec 04, 2012 (The Press Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Three robberies, one involving the shooting of a 19-year-old Ukiah man, occurred in less than 24 hours in the Mendocino County town and Ukiah police Monday were looking for multiple robbers.

It started early Sunday, at about 1:10 a.m., when two white men armed with a knife robbed a clerk at Sunny's Donuts on South State Street.

They took money from the register and ran.

At about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, a 19-year-old Ukiah man was shot, reported Ukiah Capt. Justin Wyatt.

Police found him leaning against a building on East Perkins Street with a wound to his upper body, said Wyatt.

The young man, who wasn't identified, told officers he was shot while sitting in his car parked near Clara and Mason streets.

He said two men approached his car and one, whom he knew, pointed a gun at him. The second man tried to take property from the victim's car.

The man with the gun then shot the victim, who drove a few blocks and called for help.

He was taken to the Ukiah Valley Medical Center and then transferred to an undisclosed out-of-county hospital.

The victim described the men as two black males, one about 6-foot-2, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and one about 6-feet, wearing a hooded camouflage jacket.

While officers were searching the area they were approached by a young man who said he'd just been robbed.

The 21-year-old victim told officers he'd been walking home from food shopping at about 9:30 p.m. in the area of Clara and Mason Streets when two men came up to him.

He said they threatened him with their fists and demanded cash, said Wyatt.

The victim said the two men held him down on the ground and took items from his pocket.

He described the men as black, one about 6-foot-1 and one about 5-foot-8, both wearing dark hooded sweatshirts.

Whether the two crimes were done by the same men wasn't clear, but Wyatt said they apparently occurred at about the same time in the same neighborhood.

Wyatt asked anyone with information about the three crimes to contact officers at (707) 463-6262.
