International email scam returns

VALDOSTA, Dec 05, 2012 (The Valdosta Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Valdosta Police Cmdr. Brian Childress warns residents to beware a recurring email scam using familiar people's names claiming to need financial assistance while stranded in another country.

While this scam has been perpetrated several times using local people's names to claim they are down and out overseas, Childress says it has recently resurfaced and he has been contacted by recipients unfamiliar with the scam.

When seeing these types of emails, Childress encourages people to personally call the person named in such a message to ensure he or she is OK and to inform the person they have been named in a hoax.

Recipients should then contact the Valdosta Police Department regarding such emails. Childress says these emails are connected to overseas criminal operations. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and other agencies are working these cases.

Childress also warns recipients not to respond to these emails even when knowing they are fake. Some people may feel an urge to return an email letting the senders know the recipient is onto the fraud, but the police commander asks that people refrain from such activity. A response could provide the sender with additional information about the recipient or computer access.

Last week, Childress warned residents to beware of receiving fraudulent sweepstakes letters by traditional mail. In those cases, recipients received letters claiming they needed to send a cash deposit in order to claim a larger cash prize.

The commander warns people to never send money to a stranger or organizations claiming prizes that require cash from the winners.

Anyone receiving a similar email, letter or any questionable correspondence should contact Cmdr. Brian Childress at the VPD's detective bureau, (229) 293-3145.
