Regents approve plan to demolish Hancher, portion of Art Building

State regents on Wednesday approved the plans and budgets for the demolition of two flood-damaged facilities at the University of Iowa.
UI officials said work will begin in the coming months on demolition of the Hancher-Voxman-Clapp complex and portions of the School of Art building. Both facilities have been vacant since the 2008 flood.
Substantial completion of the demolitions isn't expected until November 2013 for the Art Building and December 2013 for Hancher-Voxman-Clapp, according to UI officials. Demolition costs of nearly $5 million for the Hancher complex and $1.5 million for the Art Building will be funded by a combination of flood recovery money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and state or university flood recovery funds. Both facilities will be replaced with new buildings at different sites.
The original 1936 portion of the Art Building complex will be saved due to historical significance, with the remainder of the facility to be razed. The Hancher project will demolish the entire complex, to clear the way for green space.
Also at Wednesday's telephonic meeting, the regents approved a UI plan to lease two downtown Iowa City apartment buildings to house returning students and transfer students.
The university will enter into lease agreements with Svoboda Rentals and property management entity Campusview Management for 112 E. Bloomington St., a three-story building, and 427 N. Dubuque St., a four-story building. The Bloomington Street property would be leased for $322,560 annual rent plus $16,560 for 25 parking spaces, and the Dubuque Street property would be leased for $391,200 annual rent plus $28,320 for 43 parking spaces.
The UI is experiencing record enrollment and doesn't have sufficient space to house students in existing residence halls. A new residence hall is under construction on the west side of campus.
