Rowan middle athlete wins Punt, Pass and Kick

Dec 18, 2012 (The Morehead News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- DEC. 18, 2012 -- To compete on a stage where professional sports take place is often the dream of any young athlete. For one Morehead girl, her dream recently became a reality.

The NFL Punt, Pass and Kick (PPK) program gives kids a chance to compete against one another. Boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 15 choose to compete against each other in either punting, passing and place kicking.

Local Rowan County Middle School student Sara Beth Robinson pulled out all the stops in Cincinnati when she took home first place honors in the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition.

Robinson competed in the 12-13-year-old age group in front of 60,000 Bengals fans at Paul Brown Stadium during halftime of Cincinnati's Nov. 25 home game against the Oakland Raiders.

Robinson, who won another PPK title when she took part in the Atlanta Falcons competition two years ago, said it was great to once again have a chance to display her talents in front of a thunderous audience.

"It was a lot of fun but I was a little nervous," Robinson said. "You only get one punt, one pass and one kick. You don't get a second chance if you mess up. It was nice to hear the fans cheering for us." Sara Beth is the daughter of Carol and Larry Robinson of Morehead.

"Larry and I are very proud of Sara's accomplishments in the Punt Pass & Kick. She loves sports, especially softball and soccer, and it makes us very proud to see her do well," said Carol Robinson.

Robinson is a lover of sports at the core, with her favorites being softball and soccer.

Running from practices to games and back again, there are people along the way who help to make this possible, and this is certainly true for Sara Beth.

"I would like to thank my parents for practicing with me and taking me to the competitions," Robinson said. "I'd like to say thanks to my two brothers and my sister for being my biggest fans. Thanks to my softball and soccer coaches who have always encouraged me to do my best.

For Robinson, perhaps the biggest reward of being able to compete had to do with the social aspect, meeting and socializing with others who share her love of sports.

"I enjoyed the opportunity to compete with other girls my age in the PPK, it's always neat to meet other people who love sports as much as you do." Grant Stevens can be reached at gstevens@themoreheadnews.com or by telephone at 784-4116.
