Suspect in fatal Oakdale shooting dies in Stanislaus County Jail
MODESTO, Jan 17, 2013 (The Modesto Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
The man accused of shooting two people to death outside an Oakdale market in November died today while in custody in the Stanislaus County Jail, authorities said.
Ryan Neil Mazzariello, 26, was found unresponsive in a single-man cell this morning, according to Sgt. Anthony Bejaran of the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department.
Lifesaving measures were attempted by deputies and jail medical personnel, but to no avail.
Mazzariello was pronounced dead, Bejaran said.
Bejaran said there were no signs of foul play and no use of force.
An autopsy was performed this afternoon. The cause of death is pending toxicology reports.
Mazzariello, 26, was accused of shooting to death Abel Calderon, 20, and Ruben Mora Jr., 15, at Oakdale Market on I Street.
In December, he pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in the shootings.
Detectives said the weapon used in the shooting was a rifle and that Mazzariello was a member of the Army National Guard.
Mazzariello's mother told a Sacramento TV reporter in December that she believed her son suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder from his time serving overseas.
"He would wake up screaming, he had ... delusions, he would space out, he would feel inadequate," she said.
We'll have more on this story later.
