Prep wrestling: Chubb's 100th win seals victory for Mineral Point

MINERAL POINT -- Robby Chubb was poised to join an elite group on Friday night, and the Mineral Point fans were ready to celebrate.
But when Chubb finally notched his 100th career victory to lead Mineral Point to an exciting 39-30 decision over Iowa-Grant in a Southwest Wisconsin Activities League prep wrestling dual, the moment was almost surreal.
"It was like a dream scenario for me. It was perfect to finish the match for us and get the (100th) win," Chubb said after he pinned Iowa-Grant sophomore Kyle Soderstrom in 3 minutes, 54 seconds to secure the Pointers' win, giving them the league's dual-meet crown.
That unleashed an unveiling of "100th victory" signs by the Mineral Point fans and a PA announcement that caught Mineral Point coach Scott Schmitz off guard.
"It couldn't happen to a better kid. Robby Chubb is a coach's dream. ... He works his butt off and he deserves everything he gets," Schmitz said.
"I didn't even see the signs. I was too focused on the matches and getting the guys ready. But it's a great accomplishment for him."
Chubb said Nate Cody's win at 170 to give Mineral Point a 33-21 lead with three matches remaining helped inspire him. But Cody said Chubb's performance was a fitting way to "seal the deal."
"He is really a guy who helps us out in the match. I want to be like him," Cody said after he rallied for a 7-3 victory over Ross Caygill. "I want to be as good as him. He's a good role model."
Chubb said the Pointers had contemplated what it would take to keep Iowa-Grant from successfully defending its dual-meet title.
"They were tough at 195 and 220. We didn't know how it was going to end up," Chubb said. "But the smaller guys had enough for us."
Iowa-Grant grabbed a 12-0 lead when Ben McFall pinned Brian Steffes at 285 pounds and Shania Sarbacker received a forfeit at 106.
But Mineral Point won the next four matches -- Reid Suddeth with a pin at 113, Scott Pittz received a forfeit at 120 and Frank Baker (126) and Jake Riley (132) recorded pins to rally for a 24-12 lead.
Iowa-Grant, though, wasn't finished, earning three straight decisions -- Tucker Sarbacker (138), Luke Nowak (145) and Brian Halvorsen (152) -- to trim its deficit to 24-21.
But that was as close as the Panthers would get.
"We kind of figured it would come down to bonus points. They got the upper hand on us there," Iowa-Grant coach Ryan Allen said after Mineral Point earned a 5-2 edge in pins. "Halvorsen got a big win for us at 152 and kept us in it. But the bonus points caught up with us."
