Chavez "getting better every day," says Venezuelan top lawmaker
CARACAS, Feb 04, 2013 (Xinhua via COMTEX) --
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez
"is on his way to recovery, getting better every day," the
country's top lawmaker said Monday at a military ceremony,
clearing up related rumors.
Diosdado Cabello, president of the National Assembly, sent the
message at the anniversary commemorating a failed 1992 coup led by
Chavez against then president Carlos Andres Perez.
His message appeared to be directed at Chavez's opponents, who
have been trying to have Chavez replaced since he left for his
fourth cancer operation in December, claiming there is a power
vacuum.
Cabello warned that anyone "who crosses the lines and
instructions of Commander Chavez will be paid back by the people,"
and criticized right-wing opponents "who make up stories about
your (Chavez's) health."
Vice President Nicolas Maduro, also present at the ceremony,
intoned a popular motto among Chavez supporters, saying "We are
all Chavez," and showed a letter written by Chavez.
Also on Monday, Chavez's followers dressed in the red T-shirts
and caps representing their socialist movement, rallied in Caracas
to show support for the president.
Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro said on Sunday that Chavez "is
much better, recovering. It has been a hard fight, but he has been
getting better."
Speaking at a polling station, where he went to vote in general
elections, Castro added that "We have to cure him," and
underscored Chavez's importance for Venezuela and the region as a
whole.
Chavez has been in a Cuban hospital since his operation on Dec.
11.
