Convergys (News - Alert), a global customer management company, is expanding its workforce even further by adding 400 new jobs to its call center facility in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. Formerly known as Stream, the Sergeant Bluff Convergys Customer Support Call Center currently provides customer service, technical support and chat work for clients in the financial services and gambling technology industries.
Convergys has added an as-yet-unnamed client that necessitates this relatively substantial staff expansion, as reported in the Sioux City Journal. According to the company, this new client is a “national wireless provider” and cannot be identified due to a confidentiality agreement.
The company has already hired 80 workers who have begun training classes, and the remaining new employees are expected to be brought on by next Spring for a total of about 800. The training periods for these employees will last between three and eight weeks depending on the position, most of which entail customer service duties such as fielding inbound calls and light troubleshooting of wireless products and services.
Positions start at $10 per hour with additional incentives for performance and attendance that amount to an additional $1 or $2 per hour. Because Convergys strongly believes in the merits of hiring from within — 78 percent of the company’s promotions are granted to existing employees — new workers will have a considerable chance of moving up in the company.
Sergeant Bluff’s unemployment rate is one of the lowest in the country at around 3.6 percent, and Convergys is by a wide margin the city’s largest employer. Because Sergeant Bluff is actively working on growing its commercial property base — including the development of a brand-new business park for technology firms and light industry — the company’s expansion efforts fall perfectly in line with the city’s interests and thus will greatly benefit the community of about 4,000 inhabitants.
Despite a few downsizing moves over the past couple years, Convergys has been continuously growing its call center operations. The company currently employs a whopping 125,000 people, spanning 150 locations in 31 countries and servicing a wide range of industries.
