The Big Picture in Regards to Big Data

Maybe you have been lucky enough to hear the term big data once or twice in your life, but what does it mean and how does it apply to your company? First let’s work on defining this widely used term. Big data refers to the huge and sometimes overwhelming amount of information that comes from anywhere and everywhere including but not limited to social media mega sites, picture and videos. According to IBM (News - Alert), nearly 90 percent of all data in the world at this time was created in the last two years alone.
Got it? Alright, now we can move on. Big data encompasses four key elements: volume, velocity, variety and veracity. While I mentioned above how the potential impact of a great amount of unmanaged data could have on any enterprise, the speed at which this data can be addressed, sorted and managed is just as vital. Big data can be leveraged to increase visibility into every action taking place on an organization’s network.
The IBM site stated, “Big data is more than simply a matter of size; it is an opportunity to find insights in new and emerging types of data and content, to make your business more agile, and to answer questions that were previously considered beyond your reach.”
