Demise of Comet Marks One of the Biggest High Street Casualties

Administrators have announced that at the Comet’s call center in Clevedon, a further 56 jobs are to be axed. To try and save the struggling firm, administrators were called in last week however, at the call center, 42 staff have already been terminated. Earlier this week, administrators from accountancy firm Deloitte announced that across the firm, including the jobs in North Somerset, another 735 jobs are to be axed.

Since the demise of Woolworths in 2008, the collapse of Comet marks one of the biggest high street casualties and it comes a month after the failure of JJB Sports. For all employees, a dedicated helpline has been set up and to help those staff made redundant find other jobs, the company is running an Employee Assistance Programme. At Comet stores, there have been no redundancies to date.

However a few days ago, the administrators confirmed that unless a buyer can be found for the business, between now and the end of the month, up to 41 Comet stores may have to close. In 27 stores, a closing down sale has been initiated and unless a buyer comes forward, a further 14 stores may be identified for closure in the coming days.

“Discussions continue to take place with parties who have expressed interest in parts of the business. However, it is unfortunately necessary to begin a store closure programme and to scale back the company’s support functions,” said Chris Farrington, joint administrator.

He added that to preserve jobs, they will continue to do all they can and in order to help those employees who are made redundant during the Administration; they are working hard to put in place comprehensive support.

To enhance their chances of securing new employment, this support includes connecting people to prospective employers who are keen to offer roles to ex-Comet staff. To help with job hunting, it will provide assistance and workshops such as CV and cover letter writing and interview skills.
