Cisco Deploys New Appliance Line to Ramp up Network Speed

By Jamie Epstein, TMCnet Web Editor

Recently, the Cisco (News - Alert) Cloud Index revealed that by 2014, over 50 percent of computing workloads in data centers will be cloud-based and global cloud traffic will grow more than 12 times to 1.6 zettabytes per year. Seeing the growing demands from these forecasted trends, Cisco has deployed its innovative switching appliance, which boasts 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) and 40 GE capabilities, the next-gen speed limits required for networking. These advanced capabilities will enable data center and service provider environments to better leverage increasingly popular trends such as cloud, video, mobility and 10 GE.

Although the company already offers a wide switching portfolio, this latest deployment will allow Cisco to become a provider of 1/10/40/100 Gigabit Ethernet and converged networking switching solutions.

In addition, Cisco has also debuted two fixed-configuration platforms that power high-density 10 GE switching. Also, the company will be deploying less complex network virtualization functionality for its Catalyst 6500, 4500 and Aggregation Services Router (ASR) 1000 product lines. These products will leverage a technology know as “Easy Virtual Network,” as well as dramatically increase scalability via virtual services provided by the just-unveiled Nexus 1010-X appliance for the data center.

Together, these appliances will enable businesses to continue to expand alongside their networks and protect Cisco switching investments that have been deployed for at least a decade.

"Cisco's Nexus switching portfolio provides Tencent an Open Platform strategy and the network foundation to support very high server density and scalability at a dramatically reduced complexity,” said Henry Hou, deputy general manager of Network Infrastructure Dept., Tencent, in a statement. “Deployment of Nexus products has enabled our IT team to increase the scale and agility of virtualizing our data center applications. Cisco's Nexus 2000 Fabric Extender architecture along with Nexus 5500 and 7000 delivers the stringent high availability and application performance benchmark requirements for Tencent's service offerings to its end users."

When deploying any appliance, it is crucial that companies remember that no matter what their industry, they must appease customers and provide goods and services that organizations will be willing to purchase. Even with the latest and greatest in technological advancements, if your customers are not satisfied, the appliances won’t make it very far.
