NEI and RadiSys Join Forces

By Michael Dinan, TMCnet Editor

In a new collaboration billed as helpful to telecommunications equipment manufacturers who require Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture standards-based products, two technology companies today announced that they’ve formed a distribution agreement.

The joint venture involves Canton, Massachusetts-based NEI, an advanced embedded solutions provider, and RadiSys (News - Alert) Corporation, a server appliance products provider based in Hillsboro, Oregon.

The companies say their agreement marries RadiSys’ application-ready platforms with NEI’s integration, support, and service capabilities to expedite customers’ time-to-market.

According to Christian Lepiane, vice president of global sales and service at RadiSys, the new relationship marks his company’s philosophy in collaborating with ecosystem partners.

“Combining the depth and breadth of our ATCA portfolio, including our integrated 10 gigabyte Ethernet application-ready platform, with NEI’s established reputation for ATCA and NEBS frame-level design, integration, and testing as an integral element of its dedicated technical services and support team, will help our mutual customers achieve their time-to-market business imperatives,” Lepiane said.

Experts describe Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture, or ATCA, as the largest specification effort in the history of the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (News - Alert), with more than 100 companies participating. It’s targeted to requirements for the next generation of so-called “carrier grade” communications equipment – a series of specifications that incorporates the latest trends in high-speed technologies and next generation processors.

The collaboration between RadiSys and NEI makes sense in light of ATCA’s market developments, according to Lee Doyle, group vice president of IDC (News - Alert), a market researcher.

“In fact, offering TEMs such services as ATCA and NEBS frame-level design, integration and testing is a growing opportunity within the ATCA space,” Doyle said.

Hugh Kelly, NEI’s senior vice president of marketing, said his company decided to collaborate with RadiSys for three major reasons: Both companies deal with ATCA market needs, the partnership will benefit customers, and his company serves former Intel (News - Alert) customers, which RadiSys acquired last year.

“This means that we will hit the ground running,” he said.
