Calix, Inc., a company in the area of access innovation, announced that Broadband Stimulus award winner Slic Network Solutions (News - Alert) (Slic) has selected the Calix B6 Ethernet Service Access Node (ESAN) to bring advanced broadband solutions to residences, businesses, and anchor institutions in St. Lawrence County, New York.

There will be another Slic Broadband Stimulus project serving regions of neighboring Franklin Country. Both projects will deploy the B6 ESAN and 700GE family of optical network terminals (ONTs) to bring advanced voice, high-speed data services, and internet protocol television (IPTV (News - Alert)) services to rural parts of northern New York.

The B6 Ethernet Service Access Node (ESAN) delivers field proven pure Ethernet services, and simplifies copper and fiber broadband deployments. The B-Series features distributed traffic processing, which eliminates the need for common equipment while simplifying network and service expansion. This innovative approach to network and nodal design arms network planners with a system capable of meeting service growth demands while scaling from tens to thousands of subscribers.

In order to streamline broadband operations and minimize ongoing operational costs, the B6 system includes sophisticated service assurance features such as Video Channel Analysis (VCA) and IP Security Management. Combining the flexibility of the modular B6 system, the performance of distributed intelligence, and an extensive suite of operational software tools yields a long life system suited to meet both current and emerging wireline broadband needs.

"The advanced broadband services that these projects will bring to our region are critical to closing the digital divide that exists between those in population centers and those in rural areas," sates Phil Wagschal, president at Slic.

 "Our Stimulus initiatives will enable us to bring a world-class broadband infrastructure to rural parts of northern New York that historically had no access to high-speed data services. We see Calix (News - Alert) as a key partner to the success of these projects, as they bring advanced, scalable solutions to our region," Wagschal added.

The Slic Stimulus project in St. Lawrence County is a $27.8 million award, consisting of a $20.9 million grant and $6.9 million loan, of which only a portion is for access equipment. The B6 ESAN will be utilized to deliver advanced voice, data, and IPTV services using GPON technology, and 10 gigabit Ethernet for reliable sub 50 millisecond Ethernet Protection Switching (EPS) access transport services.
