For rural dwellers, it's hard to imagine leaving the countryside. The quiet, the calm, the ability to see the stars at night instead of the sickly yellow haze from all the arc-sodiums scattered around town...these are things that are hard to leave even before the idea of family and tradition come into play.
But getting Internet access of any quality in these areas is no mean feat, mostly due to the same things that make the countryside a nice place to live. Actelis (News - Alert) thinks it may have a solution, though, in its new line of residential Internet services.
It's not impossible to get Internet access in low-density areas, but it isn't the greatest revenue generator. It often takes a lot more capital to get Internet out to those generally unserved, or at least underserved areas than is gained in incoming revenue. There are lots of possibilities – DSLAMs, fiber-to-the-premises, and the like – to consider, but cost often gets in the way, even when government subsidies are on the table.
Meanwhile, Actelis is offering something completely different to get the bandwidth where it's needed in the form of its Broadband Accelerator system.
With an Actelis Broadband Accelerator, existing DSL deployments can get their range effectively doubled and then some, essentially meaning that those businesses that can already deliver a dial tone into homes – which, let's face it, most homes have these days – broadband can go in right alongside it.
Sure, it's not the greatest in terms of speed, but with relatively few people on the network overall, bandwidth caps often don't get involved.
With reasonably good quality Internet, often without caps, available to install into homes, a whole host of new services become available to offer. IPTV (News - Alert), streaming video, over-the-top video and a host of other revenue-generating services become available thanks to an extra component from Actelis.
Better yet, it can be done without having to alter the network or bring in a lot of new infrastructure – and that means a lot less time to profitability.
Offering more services to more users for minimal extra cost is a great recipe for profitability, and businesses that ignore opportunities for profit tend not to have many of them to ignore. Actelis' new Broadband Accelerator may not work for everyone, but it certainly has great potential to be a boost to underserved and unserved areas of broadband connectivity.
