To cope with the rapidly evolving requirements for the rapidly growing Internet,  XO Communications (News - Alert) will use Ciena’ s Packet-Optical Transport technology to provide high-speed, high-capacity next-generation optical transport and business Ethernet services to enterprise and wholesale service provider customers in XO s metropolitan and regional networks, nationwide.

Ciena specializes in high-performance network systems, software and professional services to transition today’s networks for delivering more profitable IP-based services.

According to a press release, the newly-enhanced network will enable XO Communications to cater to its enterprise customers, increasing demand for bandwidth capacity at speeds of 100G and beyond to deliver business critical Ethernet, storage and managed services applications with low latency, while supporting the company s commitment to operational excellence, performance and value.

XO Communications will also work with Ciena to offer 100G managed wavelength services to its large enterprise and wholesale service provider customers. The company is deploying Ciena s field-proven 6500 Packet Optical platform with WaveLogic coherent technology. The Packet Optical platform with OTN switching capabilities will enable XO Communications to scale for, and cost-effectively deliver, a mix of new and existing services and protocols including OTN, SONET, Ethernet and fiber channel, as well as managed wavelength services at speeds of 1G to 10G, 40G and 100G.

XO Communications will utilize Ciena’s OneConnect Intelligent Control Plane software on the 6500 to automate provisioning and management of its metro networks from the core to the edge, and leverage mesh restoration to improve network resiliency and service availability.

Ciena is also offering XO Communications its OneControl Unified Management System, a unique and comprehensive solution to manage mission-critical networks that span across domains (access, metro and core) with unprecedented visibility through protocol layers (WDM, OTN, packet services.) OneControl returns network and services control to the operator.
