tw telecom (News - Alert) is one the three largest providers of business Ethernet in the nation, connecting more commercial buildings to its national fiber network than anyone else. It provides managed network services specializing in business Ethernet, IP VPN, converged, Internet access, transport data networking, voice, VoIP and security to enterprises, large organizations and communications services companies alike.
Virtual Radiologic (vRAD) is a technology-enabled national radiology practice working in partnership with local radiologists and hospitals to optimize radiology’s pivotal role in patient care. With more than 400 radiologists serving more than 2,700 facilities and reading seven million studies annually, the company needed a powerful and available network to rely on.
“We needed high scalability as our business grew,” said Rick Jennings, chief technology officer, Virtual Radiologic. “We’re a very bandwidth-heavy customer in terms of Internet capacity, and there was a business understanding of what we were trying to do that we were in sync with with the tw telecom management. So for our business, in terms of technology and future flexibility, it made the most sense.”
tw telecom developed a proprietary, customized data network to meet all of vRad’s needs. Using cloud computing technology, tw telecom connects vRad’s Operations Center (collocated at tw telecom’s Minnetonka, Minn. Facility) with healthcare facilities around the country in order to provide fast, reliable turnaround of radiology reports and evaluations.
“The most important factors we selected a data center partner, and why we selected tw telecom, is availability of the data center environment – power, environmental and network availability has to be at 100 percent,” said Jennings.
Every 24 hours, approximately 20,000 patient imaging procedures (an x-ray, CT or MRI) will be performed at one of those 2,700 hospitals. They’re sent to Virtual Radiologic’s platform, and its doctors, in minutes, interpret those studies and then provide electronically critical care results back to attending physicians or ER physicians.
“Availability, security and scalability are absolutely paramount in our business and we find tw telecom to be a great partner for that,” said Jennings. “We are pushing into new areas of healthcare -- we’re doing things in the cloud, a relatively new concept, so with our partnership with tw telecom we’re able to show our clients quite clearly that there are no security issues, there are no performance issues and there are no availability issues.”
tw telecom enables new IT architectures and access to cloud-based applications with its Intelligent Network solutions. The tw telecom Intelligent Network gives enterprise businesses more than just a secure, reliable connection to the cloud over its resilient, fiber-based network. It’s a secure, reliable connection to your applications, resources and most of all—your people, supported by tw telecom people, who get the job done.
“High performance, highly available and secure network connections -- tw telecom is clearly a leader in that space. We have both worked together on a strategic framework that envisioned our growth and needs of those services and that’s embodied in the contract,” said Jennings.”
Data protection of healthcare information is a key aspect of vRAD’s business. To comply with regulations and protect patient information, it needed to use a network that could ensure security.
“Specifically with our partnership with tw telecom, from the point of source, where we get the information about a particular patient, we use encrypted VPN technology over tw telecom-provided networks to move that data in a secure fashion to our proprietary platform, where it’s similarly controlled, and then back to that facility,” Jennings explained.
Phase two of the Intelligent Network, Dynamic Capacity, gives flexibility, scalability and control with a click of the mouse. CIOs and network managers can respond to bandwidth demands in real-time, doubling or even tripling bandwidth on demand without compromising connectivity or disrupting the network. It empowers IT managers to regulate network capacity to meet bandwidth needs of the applications it uses.
“We have asked for many new features and we’ve had very positive and agile response from tw telecom as we’ve added capability, we’ve developed some additional redundancy beyond your normal offering, and generally found tw telecom to be a very flexible business partner to work with,” said Jennings.
