AAPT Unveils 80Mbps Ethernet Service

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

AAPT, a provider of a fiber, exchange and Ethernet network, has introduced the fastest mid-band Ethernet (MBE) service to date. With a speed of 80 Mbps, this Ethernet-over-copper service is ideal for metropolitan and regional businesses, without the need for fiber builds, the company has stated.

Mid-band Ethernet offers the same services as metro Ethernet. But generally, this service comes at lower speeds, usually at 2Mbps to 10Mbps. But it has also been told that the technology supports speeds up to 45Mbps and even more. Speeds can be offered beyond what is possible over a single copper pair, by combining various copper pairs into a single Ethernet channel.

According to AAPT, by making use of the current copper infrastructure and doubling the maximum speed available for MBE services, the company can provide an inexpensive, business-grade Ethernet service for metropolitan and regional businesses. Also, there is no need for fiber builds.

The service can now be enjoyed in 219 exchanges. According to the company, by the end of 2013, it plans to have the service available in 267 exchanges.

“The significance of the new MBE offering is that customers can experience fast business connection without the need for fiber, minimizing costs and maximizing productivity yet with greater speed and flexibility than traditional DSL connections," said AAPT CEO David Yuile. “As Ethernet is readily available on most existing routers and switches, customers are not hit with the extra connection costs and time delay associated with fiber.”

Recently, the company sold its retail business to iiNet, Australia’s second largest DSL ISP provider. According to the company, this sale in 2010 reflected a turning point for the group, according to Yuile. According to him, the telco had then enjoyed a number of wins, in spite of the problems related to reselling Telstra (News - Alert) services. Yuile said AAPT's focus on networking increased its ability to compete with Singtel Optus and Telstra.
