Success in Business Ethernet Demands Close Attention to IT Trends

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The demand for better and faster connections never seems to wane. As new innovations allow us to move faster, the latest release is soon rendered not fast enough. For those companies vying to stay on the cutting edge of technology, business Ethernet is in high demand. For tw telecom, staying abreast of user trends is key to developing the right solutions at the right time.

A recent tw telecom (News - Alert) blog explored the company’s success as Michel Rouleau, senior vice president of business development and strategy, examined tw telecom’s plan to respond to anticipated IT trends in the next year. The business Ethernet provider has built a strong record of success and reputation in the market by anticipating customer needs and responding to feedback with new innovations.

According to Rouleau, he continues to hear from customers one theme in particular: volatility. These customer companies are seeking to be agile, wanting to add value back into their businesses and deliver what their customers and users need. While delivering on these needs is a direct route to success, there are challenges that immediately create obstacles.

For one, these companies have a number of requests, applications, and demands that come at them at a breakneck speed, making it difficult to respond effectively when it comes to architectures and network strategies. Business Ethernet can often address many of these challenges, but requests come from different directions at different times and for different reasons, making it difficult to properly allocate bandwidth and support.

To address these challenges, companies can put their applications in the cloud, allowing users to find and access what they need quickly, without relying on IT support. The cloud approach also ensures the delivery of a smooth user experience, as long as the cloud provider delivers according to expectations. tw telecom aims to deliver on these expectations, leveraging business Ethernet to deliver the optimal cloud-based experience.

Rouleau notes, "Listening to our customers and being responsive to their needs has helped us shape our Intelligent Network approach. Customers have a difficult enough time forecasting their demands for the next three to five months, let alone three to five years! So part of our goal with the Intelligent Network is to give customers the flexibility they need to be responsive to their users, both internally and in the cloud."

To meet the dynamic needs of a growing customer base, tw telecom is focused on anticipating customer needs and developing solutions that meet those needs before they become problems. In a market saturated with providers, this attention to performance is critical to a competitive advantage.

For tw telecom, it means leveraging the infrastructure and capabilities they already have in place to meet the communications needs of their customers. Engaging with them to truly understand their business Ethernet needs is key to securing satisfaction and building loyalty over the long-term.

This approach not only contributes to the company’s ability to dominate the market as one of the three largest business Ethernet providers in the United Sates; it also helped the company to secure recognition as the 2012 North America Carrier Ethernet Award for Best Ethernet Business Application. This designation was earned due to tw telecom’s Dynamic Capacity bandwidth-on-demand service, a part of its Intelligent Network.
