To improve the efficiency, reliability and security of the government's IT infrastructure, Shared Services Canada (SSC)- Canada’s government department responsible for providing telecommunication services, e-mail and data centers to SSC partners, has implemented Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) managed services. SSC has signed a multiyear contract with Manitoba Telecom Services Inc. (MTS (News - Alert) Inc.) for business IP and switched Ethernet services.

Under the contract, SSC will connect up to 850 sites across the country, providing the flexibility and intelligence of IP routing and the transport quality of a single, high performance network. Implementation of an IP-based solution will allow voice, data and multimedia applications to be converged onto a single private network, thus simplifying the ability for network development and providing a higher overall return on infrastructure investment.
