Tellabs Accomplishes MEF Carrier Ethernet 2.0 Certification

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

Tellabs (News - Alert), a provider of telecom, wireless and optical networks, successfully accomplished the Carrier Ethernet or CE 2.0 certification program from the Metro Ethernet Forum (News - Alert) (MEF). In order to achieve the certification, the Tellabs 7100 Optical Transport System and the Tellabs 7300 Metro Ethernet Switch series were triumphantly tested for CE 2.0.

The award was received by Joe Shilgalis, vice president of North America Sales at Tellabs. In a statement, Shilgalis said, "As an early adopter of CE 2.0, Tellabs demonstrates market leadership in Carrier Ethernet through our broad Metro Ethernet Switch and Packet Optical Transport product portfolio. The Tellabs 8000 Intelligent Network Manager enables service providers to provision and manage Carrier Ethernet services from the demarcation point all the way through metro and regional networks. The MEF (News - Alert) CE 2.0 certification provides our customers with a high level of assurance in the performance of Tellabs 7100 and 7300 based Carrier Ethernet Services."

A ground-breaking age of Ethernet services has been unveiled by CE 2.0 for service providers. CE 2.0 offers assistance and flexibility for Carrier-grade operations, administration and maintenance (OAM), superior interoperability at network edges and increased in-depth provisioning and management capabilities.

Previously, Tellabs also implemented MEF CE 1.0. In 2005, the organization received certification for its packet transport product families.

Iometrix (News - Alert) is a test lab which is in charge for all the testing processes for MEF. Bob Mandeville, president and founder of Iometrix, said, "Tellabs is part of a select group of vendors that we have put through all the paces of the most challenging series of MEF conformity tests to date. The resulting CE 2.0 certification is evidence of the company's strong and continued commitment to Carrier Ethernet standards."

As per Vertical Systems Group’s research, bandwidth bought for business Ethernet service connections has taken over the volume of bandwidth used for legacy data services across the globe. In 2011, legacy data services in the United States were taken over by Business Ethernet. The industry is rapidly moving toward Carrier Ethernet with the rising acceptance of CE 2.0 certification by equipment vendors and operators.
