India Post has bolstered its centers for mail processing at New Delhi with a computerized system that facilitates the processing of more than 55,000 piece of mail an hour. When the automatic mail processing unit at the 70,000-square-foot New Delhi location becomes functional, India Post will hit a remarkable milestone through its most recent attempt to bring mail processing centers up to date in terms of operational efficiency.
The unit, built by Siemens India, reads addresses using coding machines and recognizes both English and Hindi.
Siemens (News - Alert) has installed and managed over 22,100 postal automation machines in more than 40 countries worldwide, so India Post’s decision to use Siemens was a decision that made the most logical sense.
The automated processing unit consists of a sorting device with structured reading capability and a video coding appliance, which interprets the bar code or handwritten names and address lines individually. Depending on the address, the sorting device routinely classifies the letters and amasses them in a specific container – all in a single operation.
Siemens India manufactured, installed and commissioned the system. Components include sorting devices, stations for video coding and a power supply unit. In addition, Siemens India offered operational consultancy assistance to India Post and carried out a large data gathering exercise, which integrated more than 65,000 addressees of cities, towns and villages into the mail processing unit at the sorting center.
The practical application of postal automation now allows India Post to considerably trim down processing times, enhance efficiency and provide first-class service. The mail processing unit can process various types of mail, including packets, articles covered in plastic, publications and letters.
The throughput of the system at capacity is about 55,000 packages an hour, consisting of roughly 35,000 letters and 20,000 assorted parcels.
