Office Furniture Transformed into Exercise Machines

By Ashley Caputo, TMCnet Web Editor

Standing verses sitting has been proven to be more beneficial for a worker’s health, as those who do nothing but stand burn hundreds of calories more than a group of individuals sitting all day. The Sit-to-Stand ergonomic-based workstations provide workers with the ability to easily change positions and improve not only computer-related injuries, but overall health with exercise.

What if we told you that not only are there sit-to-stand workstation options from companies such as Interior Concepts, but more creative options that allow workers to ride bicycles, walk the treadmill, have yoga balls to bounce on and even options for young students in the classroom?

A typical daily workout might not be enough, but the growing trend of turning exercise equipment into ergonomic desks and chairs, as abstract it sounds, might become an option for workers. Companies like Ergo Depot offer Treadmill Desks, a treadmill machine with a desk attached to the top, where users can walk for up to ten hours a day while simultaneously operating their laptops and going about their daily office activities as usual. There is also a Standing Desk Bike, which workers can adjust to the height of their regular desks and ride the bicycle throughout the day for daily activity.

There are also a variety of eccentric-looking chairs on the market that are designed to stimulate increased muscle movement, such as saddle chairs. These chairs force a more open angle of sitting to prevent users from having an irregular posture, which allows more freedom for movement and reduces strain on the muscles of the back, shoulders and neck. It also increases circulation, which creations more energy for the body.

Businesses that revolve around more arduous labor, like construction workers or welders, are at a much higher risk of facing work-related injury lawsuits. The general public does not necessarily think that over time, workers operating from sit-down work space face many long-time health risks (ex: carpel tunnel, eye strains, neck and back pain). Even worse, when the muscles aren’t moving, the metabolism in the body is not moving at the pace it should be, which is a contributor to the leading cause of death in the U.S. – heart disease.

With these ergonomic and exercise infused office furniture options available on the market – along with proven research to support its functionalities – it is vital that offices begin to incorporate these new trends into their inner workings and budget. There is nothing more important than protecting people’s health, and if there are ways to decrease the changes of medical issues in the future by simple purchasing new furniture designs, than that is a price that must be paid.
