Mark Brodsky, CEO of Call Center Training Solutions Provider Ulysses Learning, Presented with 2007 George Williams Award from Lowe's YMCA of Greater Charlotte

In recognition of his leadership services, the Lowe’s YMCA of Greater Charlotte, N.C., has given Mark W. Brodsky, chairman of the Lowe's YMCA board of managers and president and CEO Ulysses Learning, with a 2007 George Williams Award. In addition, the Lowe’s YWCA has created a new award named after him, the Mark W. Brodsky Annual Leadership Award.

The George Williams Award is the highest national recognition bestowed by the YMCA for volunteer leadership. It is given by each branch to a single recipient annually.

For more than a decade, Brodsky has been committed to giving back to the community. This is the second time he has won the George Williams Award. He also won the award in 2001 for his work with the Lake Norman YMCA branch.

In a press release, Scott Chagnon, community vice president of the Lowe’s YMCA, said Brodsky was the clear choice for this year’s award.

“He brings strong leadership, focus and an ability to take something from idea to action, which he demonstrated by helping build the Lowe’s branch from the ground up, which today has over 10,000 members,” Chagnon said. “It’s very rare for someone to receive this award twice and virtually unheard of to be awarded it by two branches.”

Leesa Sluder, vice chair of Lowe’s YMCA board of managers, said Brodsky has been instrumental in leading the Lowe’s YMCA during its initial years of operation. She said his “unique blend of leadership, strategic focus, compassion and humor carried the Y through the successful start-up years and positioned the Y as an important link in the community.”

“Mark inspired us all, through example, to take the concept of ‘volunteer’ to a new level,” Sluder added.

The Mark W. Brodsky Annual Leadership Award is given to a Lowe’s staff member who demonstrates exceptional leadership skills and performance. The first recipient was Adrianne Hobbs in 2007.

“We thought it was befitting to name this award after Mark, since it recognizes strong leadership and will go on forever,” said Chagnon.

“The YMCA has been a very important part of my life,” Brodsky states on the Leaders page of the Lowe’s YMCA website. “As a child, I first learned to swim through the YMCA and later became certified as a lifeguard. Through the YMCA I pursued a rich variety of interests, learned new athletic skills and, even more importantly, developed life skills which have served me well over the years. Today, I am proud to be part of he Lowe's YMCA family as the staff and volunteers work towards making our community a great place for all to grow in spirit, mind, and body today and for generations to come. We've made significant strides during our first full year of operation within our branch and through our community development initiatives and the best is still yet to come!”

“I feel blessed to be given the opportunity to participate in the Lowe's YMCA journey,” Brodsky added in the release.
