Cisco held an interactive IPTV (News - Alert) session where a panel of industry experts discussed a recent survey of customers and their views on the cloud computing. The discussion, led by Cisco executives, shed some light onto the enterprise perspectives towards the cloud computing adaption.

How are enterprises reacting to the cloud value proposition?

Enterprises are considering cloud in the near term, but there are considerations. The convergence of IT resources and networking resources weigh in heavily. In the end, it is dependent on the availability of IT capabilities of in-house data centers.

How are enterprises thinking of approaching cloud migration?

Many companies are considering a strategy for cloud migration. Some are still in planning, some are in trials and others are actually testing processes. It’s still fairly early in the cloud migration evolution but there are already significant expectations of how much of the workload can move to the cloud.

Brian Kliengbiel, general manager of hosting at Savvis, also shared his thoughts as to the migration. Choosing the right cloud format (private or public cloud) is integral – but it’s a decision companies need to make. According to Brian, “Location can be key – but there are other factors, such as in-country data protection laws, latency and disaster recovery and business continuity.”

What applications or workloads are expected to migrate over into a public cloud context – in the immediate future?

There are cost efficiencies to be gained from moving rapidly. Applications that lend themselves to existing infrastructures are the most sensible to transition over to the cloud environment. The move towards SaaS (News - Alert) is also helping to drive this movement forward.
