Xeround, the Cloud Database Company, announced the commercial availability of its database-as-a-service for MySQL-based applications on the Rackspace (News - Alert) Cloud. Also, the company is releasing an API, for developers to configure their application to automatically create and manage multiple database instances in the cloud.

Xeround is a service that replaces the existing MySQL database and provides seamless MySQL scalability and high availability. Xeround runs in the cloud, allowing users to scale database up or out automatically, and maintain availability even in the event of failure. Currently, users can run their database on Amazon Web Services (News - Alert) and on Rackspace, as well as via the Heroku platform, with additional cloud service providers being added.

Xeround's database-as-a-service is commercially available on the Rackspace Cloud. Also, availability on Amazon EC2 and the Heroku platform was announced last June. Xeround's service will be offered on Rackspace in the US and then expand to Rackspace UK and more cloud providers.

Xeround customers running their applications on Rackspace are able to create their cloud database on Rackspace and get no-downtime guarantee and true elasticity. Customers are entitled to a 30-day free trial, after which their database instance will be charged by actual usage.

The company has also released an API for developers to configure their software and manage multiple Xeround cloud database instances.

"We're thrilled that our offering is now commercially available on Rackspace," stated Razi Sharir, CEO of Xeround.

"This is a major step forward for us in terms of offering our customers multiple cloud platforms to choose from -- hundreds are already taking advantage of Xeround's service on Rackspace. Further, the new API enables enterprises to take the headache and guess work out of manually dealing with multiple database instances by offering high availability and automatic scaling for the database with no management or development overhead," Sharir added.

Many applications are required to create a new database instance for every end user that uses the service, especially for Software-as-a-Service (SaaS (News - Alert)), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) applications. Managing database instances is becoming a major operation problem for providers. Each database has its own needs in terms of size, throughput and performance and ensuring multi-tenancy, scalability and availability, is difficult. With Xeround's API, these applications can have numerous database instances and be optimally running in the cloud. Scalability and availability issues are automatically handled by the service.

"Xeround's solution on top of the Rackspace Cloud addresses customers who need a scalable, and reliable cloud database solution," commented Ven Shanmugam, Senior Manager, Strategy and Corporate Development at Rackspace. "Now with it being commercially available, any organization or developer can reap the benefits of an always-on and elastic MySQL cloud database on the Rackspace Cloud."
