MPSTOR, an Ireland-based designer and supplier of cloud services platforms and data storage management software, has just launched Orkestra, a new cloud services platform designed to automatically discover, register and allocate storage resources to virtual machines.

Based on the OpenStack cloud operating system launched by NASA and Rackspace (News - Alert) in 2010, Orkestra allows data center managers to utilize existing IT infrastructure, reducing capital expenditure costs and removing the risks associated with being locked in to one brand of hardware, company officials said.

"Products such as Orkestra are helping the widespread adoption of OpenStack, in both public and private cloud configurations, by providing platforms that are easier to install and that can be used with off-the-shelf hardware," said Nigel Beighton, vice president of technology at Rackspace, in a statement.

Orkestra is designed to address the growing market demand for a new generation of cloud infrastructure. Based on the open and highly scalable Openstack platform, Orkestra is able to deliver cloud solutions that are open and transparent from end-to-end across APIs, infrastructure and software stack, according to company officials.

The new cloud services platform gives customers the ability to deploy on-demand compute instances and customize them to handle particular workloads, as well as scalable on-demand storage units. Orkestra has the ability to automatically provision storage, which will help cloud service providers increase operational efficiency and reduce operational costs.

"MPSTOR understands the complexity and cost associated with starting and growing a state-of-the-art cloud service provider environment," said Tony McEnroe, CEO of MPSTOR, in a statement. "Our goal is to offer businesses of all sizes a wide range of support options, including installation and commissioning, for both OpenStack and Orkestra deployments."

In August, MPSTOR  formed a partnership with EchoStreams to provide solutions for data center and cloud environments. Under the terms of the agreement, MPSTOR combined its open-platform storage management software MPStackware with EchoStreams' standards-based and purpose-built hardware platforms to help server and storage OEMs and solution integrators build reliable, scalable, and cost effective infrastructure.
