2012 has been deemed the year of the cloud – and with good reason. We all know that cloud communications and technology have been rising to the occasion, so it’s no shock to see that it has become all the rage in nearly every industry. Apple, Microsoft (News - Alert), and Google – three of the largest companies known to mankind – have more in common than leading the pack when it comes to consumerism. They are also all rushing to batter up at the cloud communications plate, having all integrated cloud into their latest advancements. It’s very clear that consumers and businesses alike will be harmoniously living on cloud nine in the very near future, but why and how exactly?

Not only is the all-new Microsoft Office – deemed “the most ambitious release in Microsoft history” – working exclusively within the cloud for optimum performance, but the company is also looking to compete in the cloud space after its recent $492 million loss after the unsuccessful acquisition of aQuantive. Google (News - Alert) has been boasting about its all new Google+Hangout , which is expected to surpass all video chat services by harnessing the power of Google’s cloud network. Additionally, Apple’s (News - Alert) unparalleled position in the cloud remains unique and loved by millions. So, what can we expect from the cloud as 2012 looks to wrap up?

According to this recent infographic, the latest forecasts shown by major players in the analyst and research field show that global adoption of the cloud is rapidly escalating. So much so that by the next Summer Olympics, over one-third of global digital content will be stored in the cloud – an almost 30 percent increase from the meager 7 percent that do this year. Even more, the global market for cloud computing will be six times greater in the next few years – exploding from $40.7 billion in 2011 to $241 billion in 2020.

Forrester Research (News - Alert) also explains that “by 2020, most people will work using Web-based applications instead of working with software on general-purpose computers.” Even more, Forbes reports that 79 percent of companies report that cost savings using the cloud have been equal to or greater than their original estimates.

“Companies big and small are making the move to the cloud,” the infographic states. “The trend is undeniable and the benefits are real.” So why are marketers quickly gravitating to cloud services, and how is this affecting the global balance of cloud adoption?

Marketers are turning to cloud services for three specific reasons; multi-device support, cost-savings, and excellent security. See below these reasons listed in detail.

Additionally, see below the average download speed (Mbps) across the world, providing some insight into just how ready we are for the cloud across the globe.

In an age of Internet technology, it only makes sense to embrace cloud computing, whose services are delivered through the Internet. Whether you’re on your smartphone, laptop, working on the road or working from home, you have everything you need at your fingertips with the cloud – literally. All you need is a Web browser; no complicated interfaces or expensive updates or servers are necessary.

Maybe now we can see just why the cloud is taking over – and why we should take advantage of it!
