We’re hearing so much about the cloud today; acquisitions, attritions, infographics and more, but could it be that we’ve been steadily overlooking a rather vital piece of the cloud puzzle? Apparently, many think the next big thing is going to be (drum-roll) cloud-based video surveillance.

In a statement released yesterday, industry analyst and research company RNCOS explained that “cloud-based video surveillance is emerging as the next generation of video surveillance for security.” There’s a lot of room for growth and opportunity in this space, as well, as all sorts of businesses are rising to the cloud for greater efficiencies with a number of features and flexibility.

At the surface, there are some notable benefits to implementing cloud-based video surveillance, including:

  • Increased safety, as there is no video storage device (DVR) on the customer premises
  • Increased flexibility, as the stored video can be universally accessed via any Internet-connected computer
  • Increased efficiency, as cloud storage provides redundancy in the case of disk failure

This and more is what many believe will radically transform the landscape of the on-site DVR/NVR and analog camera dominated video surveillance market.

According to the company’s recent report, “Global CCTV Market Forecast to 2014,” the following reasons play very nicely into some critical concerns primarily related to security and safety, which has only further pushed the video surveillance market to the forefront. Additionally, the market is expected to reach around $23 billion by the end of 2014, growing at a CAGR of around 20 percent since 2012.

Even more, a recent related study by Axis (News - Alert) Communications, the global market leader in network video, revealed that IT is playing an increasingly critical role in the adoption of cloud-based surveillance systems. Consider the UK retail sector, which divulged that a lack of collaboration with IT and a clear return on investment (ROI) was preventing nearly three-quarters of UK retailers from adopting IP camera and replacing outdated, closed circuit analog cameras.

As previously mentioned, the benefits of such video surveillance systems are plenty – especially around the holidays when managers will be absent from their sites and can actually monitor their business in real-time via such things as their smartphone or tablet. Despite this, with these benefits come challenges and complexities perhaps not yet met.

Only time will tell what the cloud-based video surveillance market has in store for 2013. What do you think?
