Six Reasons Why Cloud Computing Changes Everything

Cloud computing is more than just a buzzword. It is more than just a trend. Cloud computing is completely reshaping how business is done because it is transforming information technology on a fundamental level.

We long ago reached a tipping point where there’s no going back. Cloud computing is here, and with it comes a new paradigm and a host of benefits. Lindsey LaManna recently wrote about six of these benefits.

First, the cloud increases the speed with which a business can respond to unforeseen events. It ups the agility. That’s because with cloud deployments, capacity and location planning are no longer in the hands of the customer, but are with the cloud vendor. This lets companies respond quickly to business changes because infrastructure is easy to roll out and roll up as needed.

Second, the cloud means the latest software is always being run. Software updates and renewals are also handled by the cloud vendor, so features and interfaces remain modern. More important, the business can focus on its core competency, not its IT systems. The cloud updates itself.

Third, adoption is simple. Users can access the software via any browser and at any time, and rolling out a service for use is as easy as signing up for the cloud service.

Advanced IT management can be rolled out by signing up for GFI Cloud, for instance. It delivers patch management, antivirus protection, workstation and server monitoring, inventory and asset tracking and integrated remote support, all without hardware investment or lots of setup.

Fourth, the cloud brings better security. Although users new to the cloud often worry that their data is less security, the cloud actually exhibits the airplane effect: Because the stakes are high, the precautions are even higher. Just as commuters are less likely to crash in an airplane than in a car, a study by SuccessFactor has shown that security actually is increased by using a cloud provider. That’s because cloud service providers take security extra-seriously.

A fifth reason for the cloud is decreased deployment times. A “go live” for cloud solutions takes typically 2-3 quarters, according to LaManna, whereas on-premise solutions require from two to three years to implement on average.

Finally, the cloud model just costs less. With a pay-as-you-go, subscription-based cost structure, cloud services require a lower initial investment and typically much lower overall costs than on-premise solutions. And if a cloud service stops making sense, moving on to a different solution often is as easy as filling out a Web form or calling a sales rep to cancel.

Neither business nor software will ever be the same again.
