Momence man charged with sexual assault near Rogers Park Red Line stop

An 18-year-old Kankakee County man has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman near the Morse CTA Red Line stop, according to police.
James Shorty, of Momence, was charged in connection with the attack about 5:45 a.m. on Dec. 19. He was identified using DNA evidence checked against the Combined DNA Indexing System, a program run by the FBI to help local law enforcement agencies across the country.
Shorty was ordered held in lieu of $500,000 bail in a hearing before Cook County Criminal Court Judge Donald Panarese midday today, said Cook County state's attorney's spokesman Andy Conklin.
The victim, 50, told police she was walking south on Glenwood Avenue when a man wearing a mask grabbed her by the throat near the entrance to the Morse CTA station and dragged her into a nearby construction area.
He punched her in the head and body, causing bruises and cuts, according to police. The woman screamed and her attacker "threatened to snap her neck" if she screamed again, according to the police report.
The woman said she saw a worker at the site and ran toward him as the attacker fled with the woman's clothes and purse, according to the police report. The items were later found in an alley and on the roof of a nearby garage.
Shorty was also wanted on a parole warrant, according to police. He's due in court today, charged with felony aggravated criminal sexual assault and felony aggravated kidnapping, according to police.
