David Joyce joins 113th Congress

David P. Joyce, Geauga County prosecutor for two decades, officially took on a new title Thursday afternoon -- U.S. congressman.
Along with more than 80 other House newcomers, Joyce took his oath of office from House Speaker John Boehner.
"It's an honor and a privilege to serve the people of Ohio's 14th district and I look forward to bringing some Ohio common sense to Washington," Joyce said in a statement issued after the ceremony. "The voters sent me here to do a job and I will work every day to represent their interests and create jobs back home in the district."
Joyce succeeds long-time representative Steve LaTourette, who announced in August he would not seek another term. Joyce defeated three challengers for the seat in November.
In a pre-election interview, Joyce said his bid for Congress was a natural extension.
"The timing was right in my life," he said. "I have a passion for public service."
In that same interview, Joyce said the economy would be a big priority. "People are worried about their jobs and whether their company is going to be OK," he said.
Congress could assist by enacting laws that encourage businesses to increase production, Joyce said at the time. Joyce also said he would strive to continue the bi-partisan approach that gained LaTourette support on both sides of the aisle.
On Thursday, Boehner warned the newly minted members that plenty of hard work is ahead.
"The door is behind you," Boehner said, according to the Associated Press. "If you have come here humbled by the opportunity to serve, if you have come here to be the determined voice of the people, if you have come here to carry the standard of leadership demanded not just by our constituents but by the times, then you have come to the right place."
