Start this week off with a kick

The new year brings a host of new opportunities, and South Mississippi isn't wasting any time this week. The holidays are behind us and it's time to get back to enjoying all that this area has to offer.
The Professional Cowboy Association Rodeo Finals swing into town this weekend at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. The action kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and runs through Sunday. This event is packed to the brim with rodeo events like bareback bronc riding, calf roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, breakaway roping, ladies barrel racing and team roping. Reserved seating tickets start at $20 with balcony seats at $10. Military members can take $5 off their admission.
On Tuesday, Edgewater Mall will host a "Junior Cowboy" clinic. Kids 12 and under can learn to throw a lasso and rope a calf or take a photo with a cowboy or rodeo clown. The first 100 kids will receive a free cowboy hat.
The Lynn Meadows Discovery Center, 246 Dolan Ave., Gulfport, has a host of events for kids and adults this week. The Mississippi Arts Commission will offer a grant-writing workshop for local artists at 6 p.m. Monday and chef Charley Bowers will spice things up from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday with his "Cooking Louisiana" class. Tickets start at $30. Also, auditions will be held for "Hi Ho Robin Hood" from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Roles are available for children through the fifth grade. Warm-ups are at 6 p.m. and auditions start at 7 p.m. Production dates for the play are March 14-17.
Lastly, Bay St. Louis Little Theatre, 398 Blaize Ave., will present "That Championship Season" at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday and 8 p.m. Jan. 16-18. Tickets are $14 for adults and $10 for veterans, active military, seniors and students with ID, $6 for children 12 and under.
