FG's N60 Billion Telephone for Farmers Wasteful - ANPP
(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) said the proposed distribution of 10 million free mobile phones to rural farmers by the Federal Government at the cost of N60billion is wasteful and should be suspended.
The party's spokesman, Emma Eneukwu, said in a statement that the party had earlier pointed out that the budget allocation to the agricultural sector in the 2013 budget was too low and questioned the government's readiness to tackle food security in the country.
"We now wonder how it would benefit the country that almost all the funds apportioned for agriculture this year would be used to buy handsets for farmers. Considering the strategic importance of agriculture and rural development to our nation and the fact that the 2013 budget for agriculture is about N81.41 billion, we can say that such project as the acquisition of 10million mobile phones for farmers is profligate at best, and corrupt at worst. It is a manifest portrayal of a government lacking in ideas, and therefore groping for logical means to look busy," the party said.
