Net gains: Shop Direct sets a hot pace online [London Evening Standard]
(Evening Standard (London, England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jan. 10--THE shift to online shopping continues apace, the latest figures from Shop Direct confirm.
The company behind the Littlewoods, Very and Isme brands says overall sales were up 5 percent in the six weeks to December 29 with mobile transactions by far the biggest driver.
Online sales were 80 percent of the total over Christmas, up from 74 percent in 2011, and 37 percent of all customers queries now come by a mobile device.
Shop Direct group chief executive Alex Baldock said: "With consumer confidence remaining subdued, retailers will have to fight even harder to win market share. To ensure we remain a winner, we will continue to invest in delivering a great digital shopping experience for our millions of customers, whenever, wherever and however they choose to shop with us."
Mobile devices were the top seller -- one tablet was sold every 40 seconds. Kids' tablets LeapPad 2 and InnoTab 2 were its top-selling toys over Christmas, beating the Furby. In fashion, the retailer's own-label dresses were up 32 percent year-on-year.
Baldock said: "This Christmas was well ahead of last year against strong comparatives, demonstrating that our combination of great products, market-leading financial services and unique e-commerce capabilities is hitting the right note."
The group has been trying to establish itself as a modern online retailer through expensive media campaigns. Lynda Bellingham is the face of its Isme brand and TV presenters Holly Willoughby and Fearne Cotton front its Very ad campaigns.
