How this story was reported
Jan 17, 2013 (Chicago Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune News Service via COMTEX) --
This series is based on a review of thousands of pages of court documents, dozens of interviews and hours of firsthand observation in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
The bankruptcy produced a four-volume examiner's report on the buyout and other documents related to the deal. Reporters reviewed depositions of key players, emails and memos that provided a detailed picture of events as they unfolded. Any emails quoted in the series were found in court documents.
Reporters interviewed current and former Tribune Co. executives and employees, as well as bankers, lawyers and others involved in Sam Zell's 2007 buyout of the media conglomerate and its journey through bankruptcy court. Reporters also interviewed numerous experts on corporate buyouts, organizational change and bankruptcy law.
Zell declined to be interviewed for the series.
In some instances, information in the stories is attributed to unidentified sources because interview subjects asked for anonymity, citing the extensive litigation that resulted from the complex bankruptcy case.
