On a chilly, winter's day, sitting inside a relaxing restaurant sounds like a great way to spend the lunch hour.
Stillwater Tavern fits the bill. The downtown Hampton eatery offers a casual menu and relaxing atmosphere that will chase away the seasonal blues. Friends chat at a nearby table while a couple of guys rack up the pool table that sits near the large front window. There's a bar to the left, a scatteting and table and chairs, and TV screens for sports nights.
Along with the nautical theme, the menu features many seafood selections. Calamari, BBQ shrimp and oysters are available for appetizers, and entrees include steaks, surf and turf, fish and shellfish. Daily lunch specials priced at $6.75 -- meatloaf, hot turkey sandwich and baked chicken, for example -- look appealing as well.
My grilled chicken breast sandwich was just the thing for a hearty yet not too filling meal. A plump, juicy piece of chicken, lightly seasoned and grilled, was served on a bun with onions, lettuce, tomato and mayo. Chips and a pickle spear completed the simple meal.
Stillwater keeps late hours with a late-night menu to feed the night owls. It's convenient to the Virginia Air & Space Center and a great spot for a quick and quiet lunch. -- David Nicholson
