Conference Center director dives into marketing

VALDOSTA, Jan 24, 2013 (The Valdosta Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- For a second month in a row, the Valdosta-Lowndes County Conference Center and Tourism Authority could not hold an official meeting because it lacked a quorum. However, on Wednesday morning, the present members continued with an un-official, non-voting, informational session where James H. Rainwater Conference Center Director Tim Riddle gave an overview of some working improvements.

Riddle is focusing heavily on marketing. "We're going to attend some convention-like trade shows," said Riddle.

While there has been a spike in promotional costs regarding the conference center's budget, this money could possibly bring a big return.

Not only is Riddle sending employees to various events, but he is working heavily on branding and doing more advertising in various magazines. Riddle is currently working on rolling out six different ads -- three for tourism in Valdosta and three for highlighting meetings at the conference center -- with a very distinct consistency that Riddle referred to as branding.

"Make sure all the ads have a similar look and feel," said Riddle.

Riddle has also been vigorously working to update the conference center's website.

"It's just about finished," said Riddle.

There will be two distinct sites for tourism and the conference center. It is Riddle's hope that the new sites will be more clear and easier to navigate. The plan also includes a new, mobile aspect.

"Most surfing now is done on cell phones," said Riddle.

Riddle is making changes to the conference center's wifi capabilities. Currently, the wireless network is open for anyone to surf. There will now be two different networks: One for employeeuse only for things such as credit card transactions; one for use by conference center guests. Each network will have an enabled password.

The next tourism authority meeting will be 8 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the Conference Center.
