BRIEF: LISD center launches students on career paths [Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Texas]

(Lubbock Avalanche-Journal (TX) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jan. 24--Video game designer Sara Sharp traces her career to a class at the Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center in Lubbock.

While a student, the 2006 Lubbock High School graduate took a 3D computer graphics course at the Lubbock Independent School District's career and technical education center.

"I'd always been really interested in 3D animation and game design," Sharp said. "So I took it and I loved it and knew that was what I wanted to do." She is a co-designer of Around the Rock Disc Golf Challenge, a game for cell phones and other mobile devices that is getting positive reviews.

Jill Berset, LISD's director of career and technical education, said 1,550 high school students attend classes at the Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center, also known as the ATC.

"What we say is CTE is for everyone," she said. "These classes give you a chance to try on a career, then go for one. It's a myth that it's not for kids going to college."
