A-Treat fined by feds for safety violations

Federal regulators hit A-Treat Bottling Co. with $130,000 in proposed fines for repeated safety violations at its Allentown plant.
The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration found 16 safety and health violations, including 14 repeat violations, during an inspection of the plant last August, OSHA announced Tuesday in a press release. The plant is located at 2001 Union Blvd.
"By continuing to disregard OSHA standards, A-Treat Bottling continues to put its workers at risk of serious injuries," said Jean Kulp, director of OSHA's Allentown Area Office. "OSHA will not tolerate employers jeopardizing the safety and health of workers."
A-Treat officials were not immediately available for comment Tuesday morning.
OSHA said the repeat violations involved, among other things: electrical hazards, a lack of machine-specific hazardous energy control procedures and the failure to ensure an unobstructed means of egress.
One serious violation, carrying a $3,850 fine, involved improper material storage in an electrical service room, OSHA said. The agency described a serious violation as one involving a "substantial probability that death or serious physical harm could result from a hazard."
A repeat violation occurs when a previously cited employer is cited for the same or a similar violation within the last five years. OSHA said it had found similar violations at A-Treat's Allentown plant in 2008, 2010 and 2011.
In 2011, OSHA proposed fines totaling $111,000 for 24 safety violations at the plant.
A-Treat is an Allentown-based soft-drink manufacturer and bottler founded in 1918. The company employs about 50 workers at its Allentown plant.
By law, the company has 15 business days to comply, ask for a conference with local director or contest the citations before the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission, an independent review board.
