UT students join 'Harlem Shake' viral video craze

Feb 14, 2013 (The Knoxville News-Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- University of Tennessee students are shaking it, along with thousands of others.

Thirty-one second videos of college students, children, office workers, sports teams and even moms and dads doing the "Harlem Shake" are flooding YouTube. They feature "it DJ" Baauer's bass heavy "Harlem Shake." The odd series of viral videos begin with one person wearing a helmet or mask dancing solo while others are seemingly oblivious and going about their normal routine. (Picture office workers diligently working at their desks while someone is subtly dancing nearby -- or on a desk.) When the bass line drops, the videos cut to a frenzy of everyone in room dancing.

Earlier this week, a Facebook invite was posted to the UTK Memes page asking students to participate in the making of a large-scale video. The invite asks that people gather in front of Ayres Hall at 4 p.m. dressed in costume and ready to shake.

Not a student Never fear. Another 'Harlem Shake' video is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Market Square. This one is slated as "kid friendly" and asks participants to "bring a helmet, costumes, and plenty of props." The craze appears to have begun with a Feb. 7 YouTube video of a father and son having fun "while mom was out." The video has been viewed more than 2 million times.
